Tom Gillis is Soaring on the PGA Tour
Tom Gillis is on a roll.
The Pontiac native who grew up learning and playing the game at Indianwood Golf & Country Club in Lake Orion is enjoying a solid start to the 2010 PGA Tour season.
Gillis kept it going Sunday with an impressive T8 at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. He had four rounds in the 60s. He closed with his third 69 Sunday at Pebble Beach, and added a 68 in the second round, for a 275 total, 11-under-par.
It was worth $186,000 and Gillis, two-time Michigan Open champion (1994, 2008), now has earned nearly $270,000 in the past month. Gillis started the season with a T25 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, added a T57 at the Bob Hope Classic and was T27 at Riviera Country Club.
Gillis, 41, is back on the PGA Tour after qualifying off the Nationwide Tour, where he was fifth on the money list in 2009. In an eight-start stretch last year, he won once and posted seven top 10 finishes. He was No. 2 in scoring average and No. 2 in putting on the Nationwide Tour.
The PGA Tour statistics support the solid play this year. Gillis is No. 6 in the All-Around category, No. 14 in putting average (1.708) and No. 15 in Total Driving.
